What Is a Slow-Rise Squishy? (And Why Squeezing One Feels So Good)

October 25, 2026

Slow-rise butter squishy being squeezed in hand

A slow-rise squishy is a soft foam toy that you can squeeze completely flat. When you let go, it doesn't spring back instantly like a stress ball. It slowly rises back to its original shape over a few seconds. That slow, calm return is exactly why people find them so satisfying.

How does a slow-rise squishy work?

Squishies are made from a soft, memory-foam-like material. When you squeeze it, the air is pushed out of tiny pockets in the foam. When you let go, air slowly flows back in, and the squishy rises back to shape. The slower that happens, the better the squishy.

Why does squeezing one feel good?

Many people like having something to do with their hands when they're stressed, bored or concentrating. Squeezing and watching something slowly return is repetitive, quiet and calming, a small reset you can do at your desk without anyone noticing. A squishy is not a medical treatment, but it's a nice habit to replace pen clicking or nail biting.

How to pick a good squishy

  • Slow rise. It should take a few seconds to come back, not snap back.
  • Soft, not sticky. A good squishy feels smooth and dry.
  • Size. Pocket size for on the go, a bit bigger for your desk.
  • Fun shape. You'll use it more if it makes you smile.

How to take care of it

  • Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Don't pull or bite it.
  • Clean it gently with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Keep it away from small children: squishies are not suitable for children under 3.

Our butter squishy

Buttersoft is a slow-rise squishy shaped like a stick of salted butter, in 11 cm and 13.5 cm. Squeeze it flat, let go, and watch it rise back. Not edible, no matter how real it looks.
